"But Mom I didn't drop it "......
Well, I have never broken any bones in my body --ever. I thought I would make it through my childrens' childhood by saying that they have never broken anything....then comes a warm winter Florida morning at middle school...I drop off my son, and go inside to visit with my old comrades, and twenty minutes later (I talk a lot) the nurse comes in and says seriously, "Diana...can you come with me?" I walk into her office and there is my Adrien on a cot shaking in pain...In the morning the 8th graders get together to work on their "football skillz" ..a pigskin pass was heading for Adrien....he runs quickly, jumps high and catches it! The crowd goes wild!!! then he slams into the metal bleachers...on his leg. The coaches get an office chair and hold his leg while wheeling him to the other side of the campus...the nurse said "take him to the emergency room..and whispered--it is broken..I think." So I am asking Adrien to tell me what happened..he said " but...Mom, I did not drop the ball..I caught it." The folks at the hospital were fabulous..(it is a country hospital and they actually CARE about people)..They did not even ask me for insurance or anything when we arrived--he went straight in. He fractured it pretty good...you can see in the middle where he took the hit..he was in a lot of pain...it is just difficult to see anyone in pain and not be able to really do much, but comfort them. They put this cool looking splint on him that foamed up into a cast-like substance. Well the orthopedic doctor saw him a few hours later and decided that he needed to wear a boot, and have some crutches....for 6-8 weeks. No more wrestling, PE or any contact sports for 3 months. Adrien is pretty devastated. He won his matches last week in wrestling. I think he growing accustomed to being injured...he is enjoying his "caterer" Todd. Adrien also made some comments to Todd about how he hated being in bed and always resting and hurting. He said "Todd, this must be sorta like how you feel when you have gout."...I think Todd appreciated him thinking of the pain Todd had went through for so long, and trying to relate to it. I just hope he mends quickly, so he can play his beloved sports again!
